What are the decals made from?
We use only the best quality graphic material designed for dirt use. We use many product name brands including 3M, Avery and others to achieve the correct colors. Materials are designed to be easily applied over clear coat or to be clear coated into the paint work for years of extra protection. (done on steel tanks) Decals are printed single layer or made same as the original decals were mfg. In some cases we've come up with a better design in order to out last the original. We spend many hours and funds in R&D to develop top quality products.
For most dirt bike decals we use a thick clear laminate, but there are several materials to make decals for different applications. To make it simple, there are 3 main categories for dirt bikes.
1. Plastic Fuel tanks.
2. Other Plastic surfaces such as side covers and fenders. (as well as
uncoated textured Aluminum surfaces such as a swing arm)
and
3. Steel or Alum. painted surfaces.
How do I apply the decals and clear coat paint decals?
Decal application & paint procedure is an extensive subject. Decal application is fairly easy but paint procedures can be tricky if you are not familiar with automotive painting. No! We do not. This is a Yamaha site. For late model OEM decals contact your local dealer. Or you can buy OEM style aftermarket decals for most late model dirt bikes at www.FactoryEffex.com We develop vintage decals for the 70's and 80's and beginning research on 90's models. Check with your OEM dealer for decal availability for your model first.
My model is very rare, with low production numbers! Can you help me?
It is possible... But it will cost you extra to cover our flat rate design fees, the same as any professional graphics design studio would. This does not mean we do not want to help you, and we would be happy to showcase rare and exciting decals for these models. But the reality is our business depends on repeat sales for popular models. Once a restoration project is done, it is unusual that we will sell decals again for that one particular machine. Without popular models YZdecals.com would not exist as a source for you while we wait for the next restoration project to come along. You must contact us via email to inquire to see if your project is possible. Our work load volume and waiting lists will be a factor.
Decals never seem to last long on my PLASTIC dirt bike fuel tank, What's the deal?
Each time we ship decals that are to be applied to plastic fuel tanks, we include a bulletin regarding fuel tank decals. But with that being said... No one can expect decals to last forever. Lets face it... Dirt bikes, motocross bikes are used in the most abusive conditions on earth for decals. Keep in mind the direct contact with dirt & mud, with the chance of arms & legs rubbing on them, and then there is the pressure washer...!! How often do you see an older or vintage motocrosser with a plastic tank and original fuel tank decals? OEMs never should have put decals on plastic fuel tanks in the 70s and 80s but they did, so here we are. Some top racers back in the 70s would put new decals on for every race. OEMs now know about this issue and later avoided using decals on plastic fuel tanks as much as possible.
There are several reasons why plastic fuel tanks are the worst spot on earth for any decal to be applied. Here's why... Plastic surfaces have a low adhesion property to begin with. One big problem is... Plastic fuel tanks expand & contract in size a significant amount, due to heat, cold and from pressure build up during riding. This can cause a shear effect on decal adhesive trying to stay bonded to the surface. The bigger issue... Fuel is a killer! Including new ethanol blends these days are being blamed for all sorts of issues. Fuel spillage or leaking from the fuel cap during a ride. Fuel vapor leaches into the older plastic tanks, compromising the plastic surface, causing a gassing out effect that can attack decal adhesives. The plastic holds in liquid fuel well enough but the plastic itself can be contaminated with fuel. You can see this with many plastic fuel tanks when they turn a dark color from the oil/gas mixture. If you have a plastic tank that is over 10 years old, most likely it has started into a dry rot phase. The original natural lubricant in plastic has slowly evaporated, or been pulled out from exposure to the elements of fuel, sun and time. The worst case fuel tanks have a visible outside surface condition due to "Chalking" from sun damage! Where the outer surface has dried so much it will turn white and begin to flake. Some vintage dirt riders are forthcoming enough to drain the fuel out of the tank after every ride to maintain a quality condition fuel tank.
One way to help stop the leaching of fuel is by treating the tank from the inside. Follow the mfg. instructions, and we suggest a good cleansing of the inside of your tank with degreaser too.

Red color works well to see where you are coating, called Dragons Blood. There is is another option that is not red if you are concerned about changing your tank color tone. You could Google this or, provided is a good read for you to get a feel for the issue found on Thumper Talk.
*Note* It is also very important that you have a properly sealing fuel cap that has a working vent tube.

Again, fuel is the enemy when it comes to cosmetics.
Obviously folks all over are trying to solve a problematic issue. Here is a quick break down of options.
1) Don't leave fuel in your tank. Drain after each ride. Cap off to vent.
2) Fuel cap with large vent hole helps with pressure build up. (expansion, contraction)
3) Coating the inside of the tank. (moderate success, experimental)
4) Slit or poke your nice decals with holes. Tool for your collection. MonoKote Woodpecker.
5) Mask off area of tank only where decals will be placed. Prepare surface for paint. Use Krylon Fusion for plastic, outdoor furniture paint. Apply decals over that area. (moderate success, experimental)
6) In the area where the decals will be placed. Heat up the outside tank surface and roll out with a hard roller. The idea is to close or seal old pours that vapor seeps through. (moderate success, experimental)
7) Google all of the above and find even more options.
We make the best possible product we can for your older dirt bike, and use specialty materials for plastic fuel tanks. We make a product to fill a void and plastic fuel tanks are what they are. Each install is different depending on many factors including different levels of plastic tank degradation. Some clients have very little difficulty while others have more. We cannot control the various degrees of each applied decal. Therefore there are no absolute guarantees on decals for plastic fuel tanks. So, why not buy extras when you know you will have these conditions or issues. We will offer discounts on qty. orders. You have been warned and no matter the outcome, you cannot say that you have been mis-informed.
Also... Clients who buy Clarke tanks. We have been getting many reports of major decal failures within days of application. We have no way of knowing what type of chemical is impregnated into aftermarket plastic during manufacturing. We find this hard to believe but cannot dispute the number of clients who complain to us after buying a new Clarke fuel tank.
How do I remove my old decals? What should I expect?
Removing old decals is a job all to its own. There is no easy simple way to remove decals. It always takes time and effort.
After decal material is removed, adhesive residue usually remains. Any decals that do not have clear coat paint will be easier to remove.
Use a heat gun to loosen the decal and begin to lift the decals. Not too much heat to burn the paint, and use extreme caution with plastic parts. Heat guns are hot enough to melt plastic. Then use mineral spirits to remove left over adhesive residue. (always try a test area on your paint when rubbing any chemical on) Steel fuel tanks most likely have been clear coat painted from the OEM factory. (including the decals) You will need to chip through the clear coat paint to get to the decals.
Sometimes this can be done with a very sharp chisel or tough commercial type blade. But keep in mind you are going to damage the paint, so sanding and bodywork will be required to prepare the fuel tank for new paint. (some use a sandblaster and go right down to bare metal, fast too!) We've heard some guys are using other softer materials in the sandblaster, such as crushed walnut shells, or glass/plastic beads.
They say it works well on paint and not too hard on the metal.
Note... If you intend to remove decals for future pattern development, do this as a last resort. Record all the information you can first, before trying to peel off old decals. Most of the time original decals will be completely destroyed during the removal process.

Email is a wonderful thing isn't it?
We do not ignore email. That would be an unproductive way to conduct business. We reply to every email we receive. Either we have the item and quote you a price, or we work on a solution if possible, or we tell you we cannot help. No matter how the response works out for you. At times during weekends and holidays we do not answer email, most of the time we can get back to you within 24 to 48 hrs.
But... Email is not full proof and there is a remote possibility your email request never arrived to us. Email backbones can go down which is unusual but your email can be lost in cyber space on rare occasions. Most of the time it is our reply to you that is bounced back or rejected by your email provider. These days everyone is sick and tired of Spam and email virus. Your email providers are working hard and offering all sorts of new ways to kill Spam or a virus. Due to this some email replies we send do not get through. You must be sure to use a proper working email account in order for us to reply. If you use a Spam blocker be sure you allow our email access. Many times we send images of our product for your request. If you set your account to reject images or file attachments our email to you will not go through. If you use a secondary email address that you want us to reply to. Please be very clear in your request which email we need to reply to. Do not hesitate to try your request again if you feel we missed you. Please inform us the best you can or, we just may not be able to reach you. Thank you!
Are the decals perforated?
No. We do not make perforated decals, and we have a few reasons why. We are making decals the same as original for a vintage market. Our mission is to create new decals for vintage dirt bikes that look the same as OEM, and perforated decals do not fit the requirement. Next, the perforated decal is a modern solution that aftermarket companies have come up with to stop the customer from pointing fingers at them. And then those perforated decals still only have an expected life span of approx. 3yrs, and that is with new late models. By then if they start to fall off it won't matter to them. So, if new fuel tanks are suspect to issues, then you can expect the older tanks are even more troublesome. What we are saying is, you could try perforated decals, but eventually you will still have trouble, especially with your older tank. So your vintage plastic tank over 20yrs old really needs more than perforated decals. Everyone likes to blame the decals, but in reality the decals are not the real problem. I don't see any 90's models on the site yet. Why is that?
We are doing our best to add as many models as possible. Right now we are working hard on 70's and 80's models, and beginning research on 90's models. We expect to have up to 1995 to be done first with the YZ models before other models. If you know where we can find some OEM decals for early 90's models, feel free to let us know.
Is there a way I can refinish the outer surface of my plastic?
Yes, there are products available to help you refinish the outer surface of plastic. But... Be advised. These are chemical products that could have adverse reactions to decal adhesives. There is no way we could know of all the different chemicals used in these products or know of all the different products available world wide. If you use a chemical polish on your plastic, the decals you apply may be at risk. In the end old fashion wet sanding from low grit number to high grit number wet sand paper in steps is a way to refinish plastic surfaces. Either way you do it, you are removing layers of plastic and making an even thinner wall surface. An even better reason to use tank sealer on the inside of your fuel tank.
